School Approach

Our School Curriculum

In our school we aim to deliver a well-planned creative curriculum which equips our children with the skills and confidence to fully participate in an ever changing world. We provide opportunities for children to explore their own culture, developing a clear understanding and appreciation of the cultural influences that have shaped modern Britain. These are shared through our British Values:- Through our spiritual, moral and cultural education and distinctively Christian ethos we promote and reinforce the British Values of democracy, the role of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs on a daily basis.  Our full British Values Topic webs can be found in the: - Our School, Ethos section.

 

Our curriculum is underpinned by the standards and expectations set out in the National Curriculum 2014 and is enhanced with carefully planned opportunities which ensure that all our children access a vibrant, broad and balanced learning experience. As a church school we also ensure our commitment to Christian values plays a key part, not only in the curriculum, but also in all we do throughout the day.

We place a strong focus on the teaching of the key skills which enable our children to be confident and independent learners. Wherever possible we also make cross curricular links with other subjects and topics in order that teaching and learning is motivating and relevant.

 

Each term we send out topic webs and letters to enable parents to see how all curriculum areas link together, through a themed topic approach. These topic webs have detailed information of all foundation subject areas and objectives pupils will be taught within that year.

 

We plan our curriculum around a two year rolling programme, to accommodate the two year groups in each phase and also mixed year groups classes. This ensure children cover all National Curriculum objectives as they progress through the school.

 

KS 1 Reading Schemes and Phonics

In KS 1 we use the ‘Oxford Reading Tree’   scheme supported by a wide range of reading books, Pupils are Benchmarked as part of our assessment process.

We use the DfE programme 'Letters and Sounds' along with 'Jolly Phonics' for the actions and rhymes.  We use 'PhonicsPlay' website for interactive resources which the parents can use access certain resources on it for free.

 

Extra Curricula Activities
In addition to all the class based topic activities we also offer a wide range of extra curricula activities, currently through a wide range of after school clubs. These are open to all ages from Year 1 to Year 6 and are varied, including sports activities, languages, dance and choir.
 

Opportunities to visit

Throughout the year parent and carers have opportunities to come in and visit us and in EYFS through parent/ pupil events. Our last open event during Science week not only allowed the children to show off their science skills but also showed the progress in science across the school. We are always open to suggestions and ideas from parents as to how we can improve communication and opportunities to share what we are doing.

This information was shared with all parents during parent's evening.On November 19th  we will also be running a New Curriculum update evening which will also have information on assessment without levels.

 

New Curriculum Overview – 2014 Communicating Change

Communicating changes. The New 2014 curriculum has many key changes which we have identified and outlined below in headline form. On parents evening key objectives for each year group have been shared with all parents for Reading, Writing, Maths and Science

 

English:-  Reading and Writing

The overarching aim for English in the new National Curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy. The National Curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils;

 

  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding;
  • Develop the habit of reading widely for both pleasure and information;
  • Acquire a wide vocabulary and a secure understanding of grammatical conventions;
  • Write clearly, accurately and coherently in a range of contexts;
  • Are competent in the arts of speaking and listening.

There is an increased focus on Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar in both Key Stage 1 and 2. Children are now required to both understand and use grammatical terms and speak about their writing. There are now statutory spelling lists for each year group. These are shared with all parents during the first parents evening of the year

 

Maths

The main significant changes for the new Maths Curriculum are raised expectations across Key Stage 1 and 2.  The curriculum sets out three broad aims to develop:

 

  • Fluency (rapid recall of facts and competency in performing a range of calculations);
  • Mathematical reasoning;
  • Problem solving.

 

In Key Stage 1 there is an increased focus on children knowing their addition/subtraction facts up to 20 and being able to recall these quickly. By Year 4 children are expected to know the multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. Fractions feature more prominently from Year 2 onwards and by Year 6 children are expected to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.

There is a considerable shift towards mathematical reasoning and problem solving (mastery through application of maths) and this will be reflected in the Year 6 assessments from 2016, with the majority of marks being awarded for questions which involve these skills, not just basic calculations. By the end of Year 4 children will be expected to convert between analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour clocks.
