Policy on Religious Education (RE)

Introduction

Our policy outlines the teaching and learning of RE. As a Church school we believe that RE plays a vital part in the overall education of our children. At Ann Edwards’s school we develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the major world faiths. Children reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding. The policy is based on Gloucestershire’s Guidelines for the teaching of RE. It has the full agreement of the governors who have approved it. The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of all teaching staff.

Aims

The overarching aim for RE in our school is to ensure that pupils learn from religions

as well about religions.

Following the principle aim of the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus, our aims in the

teaching of RE are, for all children:

  • to develop an awareness of spiritual and moral issues arising in their lives;
  • to develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other major world religions or value systems adhered to in the UK;
  • to develop an understanding of what it means to be committed to a religious tradition;
  • to be capable of reflecting on their own experiences, and of developing a personal response to the fundamental questions of life;
  • to develop an understanding of religious traditions, and an appreciation of cultural differences in the UK today;
  • to develop their investigative and research skills, in order to hold reasoned opinions on religious issues;
