Do I have the right to take my child on holiday during term-time?
Guidance from Gloucestershire County Council's Education Department
Absence from school can only be authorised by the school. There is no automatic right to any time off school at all for a holiday. The DfES recommends that a child may be allowed up to ten school days leave in any school year provided that the parent has asked in writing for this and the school have granted the request also in writing. Clearly you will want to consider carefully if the proposed holiday will interfere with your child's studies. Absence from school which has not been approved by the school in writing is unauthorised absence and as such may result in a penalty notice or prosecution for non-attendance.
